Centre sanctions IIIT for State

Staff Reporter

M.A. Baby

KASARAGOD: The Union government has sanctioned an Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) for the State, Education Minister M.A. Baby has said.

Mr. Baby made the announcement while inaugurating a teacher education centre of Kannur University at Vidyanagar here on Sunday.

The Minister said he had received information of the sanction the other day and the State government would work out the details soon. The Union government was starting eight such institutes in various parts of the country.

These institutes could be started in private or joint sectors, and the Union government’s suggestion to the State was to start it in the joint sector. But the State government had not taken a final decision on it. Mr. Baby said the sustained effort of the State government to bring institutions of excellence in higher education sector to the State had started yielding results.

The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology and the Institute of Science, Education and Research sanctioned to the State by the Union government was proof of the success.

The Minister said Kerala should accept the fact that in the higher education sector, it was slightly lagging behind other States quality-wise.

It was not far behind, but was not in a position of advantage. Mr. Baby said the State should have institutions which could match the reputation of the universities of Oxford and Cambridge. For that, it needed to attract talent from outside the State. Everyone should rise above prejudices in doing so.

The Minister said a search for land was on in Kasaragod district for the proposed central university.
