PUDUCHERRY: Former Education Minister and former Speaker of the Assembly A.V. Subramanian has been appointed president of the Puducherry Congress Committee on Sunday. Shortly after reaching the town from Karaikal, his native place, Mr. Subramanian told The Hindu that he would strive for strengthening the Congress with the cooperation of all leaders and activists of the party. Asked if he would take initiative to end the infighting in the Cabinet and factionalism in the party, he said Congress president Sonia Gandhi and other leaders had been appealing to party men to stand united. Mr. Subramanain’s appointment was greeted by his supporters by bursting crackers outside his residence. He called on general secretary of the All India Congress Committee V. Narayanasamy. He would also meet Chief Minister N. Rangasamy and outgoing PCC chief P. Shanmugam shortly, he said. The new PCC chief said steps would be taken to make the party vibrant in the Karaikal region. Mr. Subramanian was appointed as Education Minister in 2001. From 1999-2001, he was the Speaker of the Assembly. He was appointed as Deputy Speaker from 1991-1996 and 2002-2006.
