CHEYYAR: The village of Palli about 10 km from Cheyyar in Tiruvannamalai district was agog with activity after 5 p.m. on Sunday.
The villagers, including several children, squatted on the ground in front of the Panchayat Union Elementary School while many stood at a distance and watched the members of Gipsy Theatres, Chennai, stage a street play on tuberculosis awareness and health education. It was staged on behalf of the Chest Foundation of India, in connection with the World TB Day to be observed on Monday.
Gipsy Rajkumar, founder of Gipsy Theatres, and his troupe members staged the play, which appealed to the people not to waste their hard-earned money on alcohol and tobacco. It also warned of tuberculosis and other chest diseases.
Known as ‘Vidivelli,’ the play told the villagers not to weaken and destroy their families by wasting money on smoking, and not to spoil their health by getting addicted to arrack. Raj B. Singh, Managing Trustee of the CFI, interacted with the villagers and introduced the other members of the CFI.
Harini, chief executive of CFI, supervised the arrangements.
Suchitra, secretary, CFI, appealed to the villagers to make use of the weekly clinic run by the CFI in nearby Irumbanthangal village on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. to get themselves tested and treated for various ailments.
Harish Kumar of Vellore, the medical officer in charge of the weekly clinic, said that the clinic attended to patients with tuberculosis, diabetes and hypertension.
