Bhommikuppam residents want local body chief to quit

Staff Reporter

TIRUPATTUR: Bhommikuppam panchayat near Tirupattur witnessed tense moments on Saturday as the residents, who gathered in large numbers to participate in the gram sabha meeting held at Indira Nagar Primary School, protested against the “lackadaisical attitude” of panchayat president Marimuthu in providing basic amenities.

According to the residents, most of the areas coming under the Bhommikuppam panchayat, including MGR Nagar, Indira Nagar, Palathottam, Atikuppam, Elarivi and Bhommikuppam, lacked basic amenities.

The areas lacked good roads. Though the residents had been repeatedly taking up the issue with Mr. Marimuthu, he had not taken steps to relay and black top the battered roads. The supply of drinking water was also poor in these areas, the residents said.

They claimed that whenever they went to Mr. Marimuthu seeking action on the bad road and the water problem, he sent them back saying that they had to question the Tirupattur Water Board and the Tirupattur panchayat union for the bad civic conditions in their respective areas.

Some residents also sought the resignation of Mr. Marimuthu. They did not allow Mr. Marimuthu to conduct the grama sabha meeting. They wanted an assurance from him that he would immediately attend to the problems and take steps to provide good roads and augment the drinking water supply in all the areas coming under the panchayat limit.
