Thanjavur: The Minister for Cooperation, Ko.Si. Mani, visited the rain affected areas in the district on Sunday and inspected the damaged crops. People of Pattukottai and Peravurani taluks showed damaged paddy crop, ground nut, black gram and green gram at many places and sought relief. He saw the rain-affected crops at Perumagalur, Vilankulam, Adaikkathevan, Nadiyam, Kuruvikarambai, Marungapallam, Vadapathi villages in Pattukottai and Peravurani taluks. At Vadapathi, people said that 80 per cent of the late samba paddy crop raised on 1700 acres was damaged due to the rain. Groundnut on 1500 acres had also been affected. At Adaikkathevan, farmers said that they have raised groundnut as inter-crop in coconut groves which was affected by the rain. They said that inter-crops also should be taken into account for providing relief. The Minister asked the officials to assess the damage to inter-crops in that area. Later, the minister told presspersons that in Peravurani taluk paddy on 1006 hectares, ground nut on 511 hectares, gingeley on 108 hectares, Black gram on 14 hectares were affected. In Pattukottai taluk, paddy on 164 hectares, ground nut on 1149 hectares, gingeley on 861 hectares, black gram on 515 hectares and maize on 30 hectares were affected. Forty-one villages in the two taluks have been affected due to rain, he said. Kalaiselvi Mohan, Revenue Divisional Officer of Pattukottai, N.R. Rangarajan, Pattukottai MLA, accompanied the Minister during his visit. NagapattinamHealth Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam and Dairy Development Minister U. Mathivanan on Sunday visited the rain-affected areas in Sirkazhi taluk in Nagapattinam district and inspected crops like pulses (blackgram and greengram), groundnut, sesame, tobacco and cotton that were damaged by the heavy rains in the last one week. The Ministers, accompanied by Tenkasi S. Jawahar, Collector, A.K.S. Vijayan, MP, M. Panneerselvam, S. Rajakumar, K. Anbazhagan and M.K. Periyasami, MLAs, visited several parts of Sirkazhi taluk and inspected the damaged crops in many villages, including Kadiramangalam and Tirunandriyur. Talking to media persons at Sirkazhi, they said that many cash crops, including pulses and groundnut were raised on 2.35 lakh acres in the district by 1.40 lakh farmers and pointed out that they would submit a report to the Chief Minister at the earliest. They informed that a compensation amount of Rs.4,000 per hectare provided to the farmers for the paddy crops lost by them in the heavy rains in December last year in the district.
