Rain damages 1,300 acres in Theni

Horticultural crops also affected in many places

THENI: About 1,300 acres of paddy, cotton and horticultural crops were damaged owing to unexpected summer rain in the recent days in the district, said Collector S.J. Chiru.
He said that as per initial assessment, 1,031.4 acres of paddy, 30 acres of cotton and 257.5 acres of horticultural crops were affected.
About 705 acres of paddy in Periyakulam taluk, 181.4 acres in Andipatti and 124.01 acres in Chinnamanur and 30 acres of cotton in Periyakulam taluk had been damaged.
Horticultural crops too had an adverse impact of torrential rain that lashed various parts of the district in the past five days.
Grape was the worst affected in Cumbum valley. In Cumbum alone, 125 acres of grape farms were damaged. Forty acres in Uthamapalayam and 22.5 acres in Chinnamanur were also damaged. Tomato crop in 10 acres in Chinnamanur had been damaged.
Meanwhile, assessment of crop damage has been expedited in all areas to offer compensation as early as possible.
Mr. Chiru also inspected a breach developed in Sengulam tank at Poolanandhapuram and Udayakulam tank in Chinnamanur.
Promises all help
He ordered the officials to block the breach and repair both the tanks immediately and promised farmers to extend all necessary help.
Revenue and horticulture officials accompanied the Collector.
