KOLKATA: The West Bengal leadership of the Congress challenged here on Sunday the ruling Left Front to explain its charge that the State was being deprived of funds by the Centre — a charge that is at the core of the anti-Centre campaign by the Left parties in the run-up to the panchayat elections in the State. Priyaranjan Dasmunsi, president of the State Congress, suggested that the Chairman of the Left Front Committee, Biman Bose, come out with a white paper elaborating how the Centre has been depriving the State of allocations. This would not only come of use to the people but would also enlighten the Congress, he said. “If Biman Bose calls on us to respond to his allegations, we will tell the people how he is misleading them ahead of the panchayat elections,” Mr. Dasmunsi, who is also the Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister, said. Mr. Dasmunsi said that the amount of grants provided to the State by the Centre was higher than that to most other States. The funds being provided for the revival of industries in the State were high and more financial assistance was on the cards for various industries, he added.
