Jaywardene prospers after Taylor strikes

GEORGETOWN (Guyana): Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene was batting with a patient 59 to steer his team to 330 for five at lunch Sunday on the second day of the first Test against the West Indies.

Jayawardene hit six boundaries from 145 balls in 3 hours, 40 minutes at Providence Stadium. Prasanna Jayawardene was on 21 off 79 balls at the break for an unbroken stand of 53.

Fast bowler Jerome Taylor had Tillekeratne Dilshan trapped leg-before-wicket for 20 in the only wicket to fall as Sri Lanka added 61 runs in 30 overs in the session after resuming on 269 for four.

Pick of the bowlers

Taylor, the pick of the West Indian bowlers on day one, had figures of four for 73 from 27 overs.

The West Indies chose not to take the new ball, and Taylor’s swing provided him with a wicket after 20 minutes. Dilshan had edged a boundary before he played around an inswinger and was ruled out by umpire Simon Taufel to leave Sri Lanka on 277 for five. — AP
