MARCHING ON: Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani scored in Manchester United’s 3-0 win over Liverpool.

LONDON: Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 34th goal of the season in Manchester United’s 3-0 win over 10-man Liverpool in the English Premier League here on Sunday.

And, Chelsea kept alive its hopes of winning the Premier League title at the same time as severely denting Arsenal’s when late goals from Didier Drogba gave it a 2-1 come-from-behind win at Stamford Bridge.

Wes Brown and Nani also scored at Old Trafford for United.

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina almost palmed the ball into his own goal in the 33rd minute and fumbled again a minute later to allow United to take the lead. Rushing out to punch away a cross from Rooney, Reina was beaten to the ball by Brown, who headed it over the line.

Ronaldo scored his 25th Premier League goal in the 79th minute, just moments after Reina pushed another of his attempts on to the crossbar. The Portugal winger headed home from a corner by Nani.

United made it 3-0 in the 81st through Nani, who played a one-two with Rooney before shooting into the corner.

Key man

Drogba scored after 73 and 82 minutes to give Chelsea victory after Bacary Sagna had put Arsenal ahead in the 59th minute with a near-post header from a Cesc Fabregas corner.

The victory lifted Chelsea into second place on 68 points from 31 matches, as Arsenal, now without a win in five league games, slipped to third on 67 points. Manchester United, on 73 points, maintained its lead at the top of the table.

The loss left Liverpool on 59 points and out of contention.

The results: Manchester United 3 (Wes Brown 34, Cristiano Ronaldo 79, Nani 81) bt Liverpool 0; Chelsea 2 (Didier Drogba 73, 82) bt Arsenal 1 ( Bacary Sagna 59 ). — Agencies
