First of its kind substation for Madurai soon

R. Sairam

MADURAI: The first substation in Madurai to utilise underground cable network, coming up near Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, is nearing completion.

“The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board is taking all measures to commission the substation before the Chithirai festival. We plan to complete the work in another 15 days,” K. Balasubramanian, Chief Engineer (Distribution), of Madurai region, said here on Monday.

Nearly 80 per cent of all cable-laying work has been completed. An inlet transformer, which would supply power to the 8 mega volt ampere Meenakshi Amman Temple substation, is being installed at Arasaradi. It would be completed by this week, he said.

Rs.5-crore project

The total cost of the project is Rs. 5 crore, which includes the cost of the inlet transformer (Rs. 1.5 crore) and substation equipment (Rs. 50 lakh). Upon completion of the project, around Rs. 200 crore would be spent on modernising the TNEB infrastructure in the city. Only Chennai and Tirunelveli were the other districts in the State to have underground electricity cables. Two other substations, at Vandiyur and Thaniyamangalam, which will use the usual overhead cables — have also been completed. “The Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy has consented to commission them. The date has been tentatively fixed in the first week of April,” Mr. Balasubramanian said.
