Self-financing medical colleges’ fee fixed

KOCHI: The Fee Regulatory Committee for Professional Colleges in the State on Monday announced the fee structure for six self-financing medical colleges till 2010.

The minimum annual tuition fee is Rs.2.40 lakh and the maximum Rs.2.58 lakh. The fee will be applicable during the 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 academic years.

The committee, after a sitting here, announced the fee structure for the following self-financing medical colleges: Jubilee Medical Mission, Thrissur (Rs.2.58 lakh); Amala Institute of Medical Sciences, Thrissur (Rs.2.40 lakh); Pushpagiri Institute of Medical Sciences, Thiruvalla (Rs.2.46 lakh); MES Medical College, Perinthalmanna (Rs.2.55 lakh); Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church Medical College, Kolencherry (Rs.2.48 lakh); and Kochi Cooperative Medical College (Rs.2.40 lakh).

Addressing a press conference here, P.A. Mohammed, head of the committee, said the fee was arrived at on the basis of the income tax reports and audited account submitted by the managements. The committee also considered the actual expenses required for running a medical college in the State, he said.

Pointing out that the managements had asked for an annual fee ranging between Rs.3.3 lakh and Rs.5.5 lakh, Mr. Mohammed said the committee had rejected the expenditure statements submitted by the managements on three occasions.

The committee had found that the managements had included the expenditure incurred on their dental and pharmacy colleges while submitting the records for finalising the fee for the medical colleges. Later, the committee directed the managements to submit their audited account reports.

The committee said that it was ready to fix the fee structure of other colleges that entered into an agreement with the State government for admission in the ensuing academic year.
