‘Do not politicise Rahul’s initiative’

BIDAR: Union Minister of State for Planning M.V. Rajasekharan has said that All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s visits to villages should not be politicised as the aim is to listen to the problems of poor people and farmers.

Addressing a press conference at Humnabad taluk in the district on Monday, Mr. Rajasekharan said that political parties should not “create confusion” over the initiative undertaken by Mr. Gandhi.

Mr. Gandhi was an influential leader, and he was touring the State to get firsthand information on the plight of Dalits, tribal people and poor people. “It is not right to politicise the issue,” he said.

Asked whether he would contest the coming Assembly elections, Mr. Rajasekharan said that he would not contest the elections but maintained that it was too early to say anything.

“I will continue to tour the State and approach people even if I am not a Minister,” he said.

Regarding the return of the former Chief Minister S.M. Krishna to State politics, Mr. Rajasekharan said that he was a seasoned politician and his decision should be welcomed.

He said the entry of the former Deputy Chief Minister M.P. Prakash into the Congress had strengthened the party.

Mr. Rajasekharan was hopeful of his party doing well in the elections and attaining absolute majority to capture power in the State.

To a question, he said, “Every Congressman is a potential chief ministerial candidate, but the party high command will decide on the next Chief Minister if the party is voted to power.”

Later, Mr. Rajasekharan laid the foundation stone ofthe mini-Vidhana Soudha in Humanabad.

Addressing the gathering, he said that he had asked Deputy Commissioner Harsh Gupta to send an estimate of the damage caused by the incessant rain in the district and the Union Government would provide funds based on it.

The former Minister Basavraj Patil Humnabad, president of the zilla panchayat Jayasheela Reddy and chief executive officer of the zilla panchayat J. C. Prakash were present.
