Good response to ‘Militant Mela’

Staff Reporter

MACHAREDDY (NIZAMABAD DT.): There was an overwhelming response to the ‘Militant Mela’ (counselling for former Maoists) conducted by the district police at Machareddy mandal headquarter on Monday.

Over 500 former naxalites who surrendered over the years in Sadasivanagar, Kamareddy and Machareddy mandals, once the hotbed of Left-wing extremist activity attended the mela to apprise their woes to senior police and civil officers and also to seek assistance from them for rehabilitation.

The aging mothers of Swami, District Committee Secretary, CPI (Maoist), Erragolla Ravi, party senior leader and others attended the meeting and appealed to their sons to come out of the extremist party and join the mainstream. Nothing can be done leading an underground life, they appealed.

Deputy Inspector General of Police K. Rajaratnam Naidu handed over cheques worth Rs.1,000 each to Kistabhai, mother of Swami, Bhumavva, mother of Ravi and another militant’s mother Mallavva. He also promised them to ensure Rs.300 pension every month from the police department.

Among those who attended the mela included SP B.L. Sujatha Rao, DSP Kamareddy, V. Shyam Sunder, OSD Surya Prakash Rao and CI S. Ravikumar and SIs Sadasivanagar, Kamareddy and Machareddy.

Mr. Rajaratnam Naidu said a number of naxals were provided rehabilitation in the district and added that efforts are on to rehabilitate the remaining ones.
