Foreign delegates have field day at CPI congress

Left parties’ struggle in India comes in for praise

HYDERABAD: It was the fraternal delegates’ day all through at the 20th national congress of the Communist Party of India here on Monday.

Members of the 29 delegations from 26 countries, from the United States in the West to Japan in the East, showered encomiums on the struggle by the Left parties in general and the CPI in particular, against the advent of “US imperialism” in India. They shared their experiences in taking the “capitalist forces” head on in their respective countries.

Negotiations decried

A feature of the meeting was the participation of Palestinian Ambassador Osama Musa who shared the dais with his “cousin” and Communist Party of Israel central committee member Mansour Dahamsheh.

Mr. Musa criticised “philosophers” who favoured negotiations to resolve the ongoing conflict in the occupied territories. “How long can we negotiate. How can we negotiate with somebody who stands in my bedroom?” he asked.

Vocal criticism

Another highlight was the speech by Communist Party of USA representative Terrie Albano who was vocal in her criticism of the George Bush dispensation.

“We are optimistic that Mr. Bush and his clones will be defeated decisively, setting the stage to make real an end to the war in Iraq,” she said.
