‘Question paper’ leak: six being quizzed

BANGALORE: Six persons allegedly involved in spreading rumours and selling the Second Pre-University examination question papers to gullible students are being interrogated by the Vijayanagar police, S.G. Hegde, Commissioner, Department of PU Education, has said.

Speaking to presspersons here on Monday, Mr. Hegde said that the gang used to collect Rs. 15,000 a paper from students. The six who have been taken into custody by the police have been identified as C. Shivakumar, said to be the kingpin and known as “CS,” Hemanth Raj, Kumar, Sanjeev Pawar, Vinay and Kedarnath. Poornima, Vinay’s mother, is also allegedly involved in the racket.

Based on the phone calls received by the department officials, the police were able to take into custody the “agents” and the kingpin. They also raided Veenaj Study Centre, Jeerige Building, Malleswaram, where they found “CS.” Mr. Hegde said “CS” is an assistant teacher in a high school in Cottonpet in Bangalore. The police have seized Rs. 1.12 lakh in cash, mobile phones of all the accused and a few bank deposit slips.

Department officials said that they were getting around 10 calls everyday before the examination commenced. “After the police took into custody the six persons, we have not received any calls,” said Mr. Hegde.

Asked whether this was a Statewide racket, he said that the investigation was still on. However, according to the clues already available, it seemed unlikely that the gang operated throughout the State.

He also said that one student was found along with the agents. He was reportedly waiting for them to give him the mathematics question paper. “I requested the police to release him, so that he could appear for the examination held on Monday. The police may question him later. He told us that he was informed about the gang by a person named Reddappa. He is currently absconding and the police are on the lookout for him,” Mr. Hegde added.

Mr. Hegde urged students not to fall prey to such rumours. He said that department had taken all steps to ensure that the question papers do not leak.
