Translation awards given away

CHENNAI: Syed Kabeer Ahmed, K. Damodar Rao and V. Ayothi were given the Indian Literature Golden Jubilee (1957-2007) Literary Translation Award on Monday for translating poems from Urdu, Telugu and Tamil into English.
The consolation awards, each comprising a certificate and a cash price of Rs 2,500 each, were given away by Ashokamitran, eminent writer-cum-translator and Sahitya Akademi Award winner, at a function organised by the Sahitya Akademi.
Ashokamitran said that being litterateur was a birth right.
However, the translators must have a flair for writing. Only then could the work be enjoyed; or the enterprise would go waste.
Mr. Rao thanked the Sahitya Akademi for honouring the translators. “From now on, translations will no longer be considered a secondary work.”
“Do more to inspire”
Mr. Ayothi said a lot of work had to be done by the Akademi to inspire aspiring writers to take up translation. “Translation is inevitable. It is only through translation that we can know about India and its culture.”
A.J. Thomas, Editor, Indian Literature, Sahitya Akademi, said the Akademi would go online soon.
