East Godavari district surpasses rice production target

Staff Reporter

Kakinada: East Godavari district has achieved a production of 8.34 lakh metric tonnes of rice in 2007-08 against the target of 7.68 MT and productivity of 3,476 kg per hectare which is the highest in the last five yields. Paddy is being currently cultivated in 4.15 lakh acres, 30,000 acres more than the normal figure of 3,85,000 acres, according to district Collector M. Subrahmanyam.

Speaking to reporters, he said crop cutting was scheduled to commence on April 1 and the yield was likely to be between 40 and 42 bags per acre. The pests and disease were below the economic threshold level due to focus on integrated pest and nutrient management.

He said licences of 22 fertilizer dealers were suspended for selling it above the stipulated price.
