Memorable day for Jebavy

GURGAON: Roman Jebavy of the Czech Republic slugged it out 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(6) against Hsin-Han Lee of Chinese Taipei in the first round of the $10,000 ITF men’s Futures tennis tournament at the NTA Complex here on Monday.

The 18-year-old Czech, fresh from a string of good results, including a final, in similar tournaments in Thailand over the last few weeks, battled his way past the 19-year-old Taipei lad who had beaten him in two tie-breaks in the pre-quarterfinals at Nonthaburi last month.

Facile win

Only four singles matches, all featuring foreigners billed for the day. Jebavy caused an upset in the doubles later in partnership with Andrey Kumantsov of Russia, beating the top-seeded Vivek Shokeen and Ashutosh Singh in straight sets.

Kamala Kannan in partnership with Aqeel Khan of Pakistan showed the door to the third-seeded Bogdan-Victor Leonte of Romania and Navdeep Singh.

The fourth-seeded pair of Danila Arsenov of Russia and Vaja Uzakov of Uzbekistan was knocked out by Tushar Liberhan and Rupesh Roy in a thrilling fashion at 12-10 in the super tie-break.

The results: Singles (first round): Syrym Abdukhalikov (Kaz) bt Katsushi Fukuda (Jpn) 7-5, 6-4; Roman Jebavy (Cze) bt Hsin-Han Lee (Tpe) 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(6). Idan Rosenberg (Isr) bt Sergei Krotiouk (Rus) 7-5, 6-4; Sun Peng (Chn) bt Sarvar Ikramov (Uzb) 6-4, 6-1.

Doubles (pre-quarterfinals): Roman Jebavy (Cze)-Andrey Kumantsov (Rus) bt Vivek Shokeen-Ashutosh Singh 6-3, 6-4. Hsin-Han Lee (Tpe)-Wang Yu jr. (Chn) bt Hyun Woo Nam (Kor)-Elbert Sie (Ina) 6-4, 6-3.

Aqeel Khan (Pak)-Kamala Kannan bt Bogdan bt Victor Leonte (Rou)-Navdeep Singh 6-2, 7-6(7); Mithun Murali-V.M. Ranjeet bt Katsushi Fukuda-Kento Takeuchi (Jpn) 6-1, 6-2.
