Five women Maoist activists held in West Bengal
Kolkata: A month after Maoist leader Somen was arrested, five women Maoist activists were held on Monday when they were pasting posters seeking his release, at the Bagha Jatin railway station here.
“The arrests will help in curbing the recent spurt in Maoist activities in West Bengal,” IGP (law and order) Raj Kanojia said. Some pamphlets were seized from the women, who were later produced before a court.
The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Alipore, J. Koley, rejected their bail plea and remanded two to police custody till March 31 and three to jail custody for the same period of time.
The posters demanded Somen’s release and that he be declared a political prisoner, the police said. He was nabbed from the Hridaypur railway station in North 24-parganas district on February 24.
The arrested women have been identified as Kanika Debnath, Manju Mondal, Minu Saha, Puja Mondal and Bishnupriya Baidya. They were initially detained and later, arrested and charged with Section 121 IPC (anti-national activities). — PTI
