Eco clearance accorded to LPG storage system

Santosh Patnaik

VISAKHAPATNAM: The country’s largest mounded bullet storage system for storing LPG/propylene proposed at Visakh Refinery of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited has been accorded environmental clearance.

The Ministry of Environment and Forests recently issued the clearance for the Rs.120- crore project having the most advanced features for safety. Worldwide it is proved that mounded storage is safer than the conventional system. The company has taken several steps to improve safety apparatus after leakage from LPG spheres and subsequent explosion on September 14, 1996.

The mounded storage project is considered most prestigious and crucial for Visakh Refinery, which made a humble beginning in 1957 with a production capacity of 0.65 million tonnes. The present capacity of 7.5 million tonnes is being doubled with an investment of Rs. 9,000 crores. Clean fuel project is also under implementation for Euro III and IV compliance.

The mounded storage system will involve an investment of Rs. 120 crores. The feasibility for storage of LPG in bullets was conducted last year.

Turnkey basis

The contract for construction and installation of the facility has been awarded to Fabtech Project and Engineers Limited under lump sum turnkey basis by HPCL.

The Pune-based company has five workshops with advanced fabrication of pressure vessels in an area of 2,00,000 square feet.

Sources said mounded storage system at Visakh Refinery would be operational in a year.
