IMA’s anti-vector road show concludes

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Public participation and initiative in organising active vector control measures around individual households alone can check the proliferation of Aedes species of mosquitoes, which spread dengue fever and chikungunya, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has pointed out. The road show on vector control strategies organised by IMA, which concluded in front of the Secretariat on Monday, drew the attention of the public to the measures that they can adopt to prevent the increased breeding of mosquitoes around individual households.

Aedes species is an urban, peri-domestic mosquito, which breeds in and around houses in small pools of stagnant fresh or rainwater . Households become the main breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes as their flight span of is very limited.

Doing our bit

“The vector control activities launched by the government are limited. Sustained effort by individuals regarding source reduction can pay huge dividends. The focus of our road show was on making people aware of these facts and to encourage them to do their bit, rather than wait for the authorities to launch massive operations,” Raju Kumar, treasurer, IMA’s district branch, which organised the road show, said.
