KOCHI: At the present rate of degradation of wetlands, the Vembanad backwaters could soon become a playground, said K.R. Viswambharan, Vice-Chancellor of Kerala Agricultural University. He was inaugurating a seminar on action plan for Ramsar sites of Kerala organised by the Rajiv Gandhi Chair for Contemporary Studies at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) here on Monday. He said all sorts of intervention such as pollution, encroachment and depletion of sources were leading to horizontal and vertical shrinkage of water bodies in the State. The situation had also led to depletion of fish resources,. Scientific papers and suggestions made by experts on wetlands should be published in regional language and distributed among local communities, he said.
