Tirupur Corporation introduces ward development fund

TIRUPUR: The Tirupur Corporation on Monday introduced a ‘Ward Development Special Fund’ in which Rs. 2. lakh each will be allotted to all the 52 wards to carry out development works.

Mayor K. Selvaraj while presenting the first budget of the Corporation allocated a sizeable amount towards laying roads, constructing drainages and classrooms in Tirupur.

A sum of Rs. 80.12 crore would be spent to construct storm water drains mostly at unapproved layouts, while Rs. 45.69 crore for laying roads with Government grant and loan. In addition, Rs. 50 lakh would be spent towards laying concrete roads.

Mr. Selvaraj said drinking water distribution lines would be laid in left out areas at Rs. 3.05 crore while Rs. 4.35 crore allotted for constructing new overhead tanks to streamline drinking water supply. Generators would be installed at Rs.1.87 crore at the overhead tanks to ensure regular water supply. Four chlorination plants would also be installed.

New classrooms would be constructed in corporation schools at Rs. 8.45 crore. The Corporation would purchase tables and desks at Rs. 75 lakh to all the corporation schools. The schools would get a fresh coat of painting at Rs.50 lakh and fans at Rs. 50 lakh.

Mr. Selvaraj said that the health centres at Susaiyapuram, KVR Nagar, LRG Nagar and Mettupalayam dispensary would be renovated at Rs. 50 lakh. The Corporation maternity centres would get an ultra sonogram each at Rs.12 lakh and an X-ray unit at Rs.11 lakh.

The Mayor said sanitary complexes would be constructed at the 13 sanitary section offices here at Rs. 52 lakh. A total of 10 high mast lights would be erected at important junctions besides installing lamp posts on the medians of Avanashi, Palladam, Dharapuram and Kangeyam Roads. A sum of Rs.4 crore would be allocated to install 2,000 street lights across the city.

While announcing a 35 per cent increase in property tax after the proposed revision, the Mayor said the local body would get a revenue of Rs. 14.25 crore in 2008-09 against the revised revenue of Rs.6.14 crore in 2007-08. From the Revenue Fund, the local body was expecting Rs.30.68 crore against Rs.26.60 in the current fiscal.

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam councillors led by former MLA C. Sivasamy staged a walkout in protest against the proposed hike in property tax. Criticising the Corporation for not according priority to schools and hospitals, he said the budget was not constructive.

Communist Party of India (CPI) and CPI (Marxist) welcomed the budget. CPI (M) leader K. Thangavel said if the anomalies in property tax rectified there would be no need to hike it. He said there was disparity in property tax building to building in the same locality. He asked the administration to step up collection of professional tax.
