Renovation of tanks in all districts likely

Under Central government-assisted ‘Repairs, Renovation, Restoration’ project

KANCHEEPURAM: The Central government-assisted project of Repairs, Renovation and Restoration (RRR) of traditional waterbodies is likely to be extended to all districts in the State.

According to sources, a total of 46 tanks (38 in Villupuram and 8 in Sivaganga districts) have been covered last year under the scheme as a pilot project.

The restoration of these traditional waterbodies to their original status has resulted in better harnessing of flood water, the sources said.

Minister’s inspection

Minister for Public Works Durai Murugan, who inspected the rain-damaged crops in Thirukazhukundram and Madurantakam taluks in Kancheepuram district on Sunday, gave a positive reply when reporters asked him whether the RRR scheme would be extended to Kancheepuram in view of the large number of tanks it had within its domain.

However, he refused to elaborate on the aspects such as whether it would be implemented as the RRR scheme or as a new project.

Minister for Labour Welfare T.M. Anbarasan said the State government had announced that the MLAs had been allowed to take up renovation or repair works in two tanks in their respective constituencies, using money from the local area development funds.

Palar check-dam

On the status of constructing a check-dam across the Palar at Vayalur on the East Coast Road, Mr. Durai Murugan said the project for which tenders had been called by the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewage Board was yet to take off.

At the same time, a proposal to construct a check-dam across the same river near Wallajabad on the Kancheepuram-Chengalpattu Road had been mooted and was being pursued by the government, Durai Murugan added.

Collector Santosh K. Misra, Chengalpattu MLA K. Arumugham and Madurantakam MLA Gayathri Devi were present along with Mr. Durai Murugan during the inspection.
