BJP wants crop insurance norms relaxed

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Bharatiya Janata Party has demanded that the norms of the crop insurance scheme be relaxed.

Party State president L. Ganesan told a press conference here on Monday that the present rules were so stringent that not all farmers could derive the benefits. Liberalised norms would help them in times of distress.

On the compensation given to farmers, he said the State gave Rs.4,000 a hectare, which was inadequate. But the government, too, had some limitations.

A comprehensive and liberalised insurance scheme would ensure farmers adequate compensation, without putting any strain on the State’s finances.

He charged the United Progressive Alliance government with failure to make the crop insurance scheme, launched by the BJP-led government, a success.
