What they observed: Students looking at exhibits on display at The American College in Madurai. MADURAI: Colour composition, colour contrast, lighting, moods of a subject, framing a picture, depth of field, focus and depth. For all those wondering what these cryptic talk of photographers mean, here is a chance to figure out what lays behind all these jargon. Organised by the first batch of Visual Communication students of The American College, “Shutter Fever,” a two-day photo exhibition that began on Monday attempts to demystify these jargon. Says the Department Coordinator, R. Prabahar, “The students have been asked to explore. They have taken pictures across all categories such as macro, wildlife, landscape, portrait and nature.” In fact, he says, one of the pictures on display — a snap of the hills at Nagamalai Pudukottai — won the first prize under the nature category at a competition in a Coimbatore college. Students have also been advised to look at various other elements of photography such as angles. Training in these aspects, Mr. Prabahar says, will help the students when they graduate to cinematography and photography the next academic year. Students used digital and digital SLR cameras for the purpose. The snaps taken range from an action shot of a cat whose eyes literally pop out of the snap to nature snaps. Around 110 pictures taken by 29 undergraduate students are on display. Open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., the expo is open to the public. It concludes on Tuesday.
