MYSORE: Rangayana will play host to “Palguna Rangotsava”, a three-day programme to mark World Theatre Day, here from Wednesday.

The programme has been organised by GPIER theatre artistes’ group and it also marks the 15th anniversary of GPIER.

Extracts of Keshavareddy Handral’s work “Halliya Anubavagalu” have been adapted to stage the play “Okkala Onapu”. It will be staged at Vanaranga at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The play will portray the life and sorrows of rural people.

Incidentally, it won the second prize at the Akhila Bharata Kuvempu Memorial Kannada competition organised by Mumbai Karnataka Sangha.

“Shakespeare Swapna Nauke” by H.S. Shivaprakash will be staged at Vanaranga at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

“Sethumadavana Sallapa”, by T.N. Narasimhan will be staged at Sriranga at 7 p.m. on Friday.

All the plays have been directed by Mime Ramesh of GPIER.

Mr. Ramesh told presspersons here that GPIER had plans to stage plays through the year to commemorate its 15th anniversary. “At least one play will be staged in a month by amateur artistes. Opportunities will be given to new directors to stage the plays,” he said.

A seven-day theatre festival has also been planned to encourage amateur artistes to showcase their talent.

Theatre personality Srikanta Gundappa will exhibit rare photographs of Karnataka theatre during the rangotsava. The rangotsava will be inaugurated by danseuse Vasundhara Doraswamy.
