No loss of life reported Rs. 25 lakh received under Calamity Relief Fund DAVANGERE: As many as 115 houses were damaged in rain in the district on Sunday and Monday. The district administration has estimated the loss at Rs. 1 crore. Chairing a public grievances meeting here on Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner M.B. Dyaberi said no loss to human life was reported. There was no crop loss either. He said officials were in the process of assessing the damage caused, and that compensation would soon be given to those whose houses were destroyed. Roads and drains were also damaged, he said. Mr. Dyaberi said there were enough funds for paying compensation to victims. The district had received Rs. 25 lakh a few days ago under the Calamity Relief Fund, he added. He said the district had received a rainfall of 89 mm in the past 10 days, he added. Eighty-one houses had been damaged in Harpanahalli, 21 in Davangere, four each in Honnali and Jagalur, and five houses in Harihar, Mr. Dyaberi said. Incidents of cooking gas cylinders being stolen from schools have been on rise particularly in Honnali. An official from the Education Department said that 14 cylinders had been stolen from schools in Honnali in the past one week. The Deputy Commissioner asked him to file a complaint with the police and also to apprise the gas agency concerned, furnishing the numbers embossed on the cylinders, so that the thieves could be caught. Mr. Dyaberi expressed concern over the absence of books which could help prepare students for higher education and competitive examinations. When the district librarian told him that Rs. 2 lakh had been kept apart for the purchase of books, he instructed the former to purchase them, install computers and get two broadband connections to set up a database. He also told the authorities to provide toilet facilities at the library premises, and ensure that a powerful generator was installed so that power cuts in the evenings would not affect students.
