Chaotic scenes in Rajasthan Assembly

Special Correspondent

Speaker adjourns the House thrice

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Assembly witnessed noisy scenes and was adjourned thrice on Tuesday after the Opposition Congress raised the issue of chairpersons of various Boards and institutions, who were not elected to the House, being made in-charge of districts and “allowed to interfere” in the administration.

Congress MLA and Pradesh Congress Committee president C.P. Joshi, raising the matter during Zero Hour, demanded that the issue be discussed in the House and all such persons be divested of their authority.

The treasury members defended the Government’s decision, saying it was aimed at bringing in a sense of responsibility among the district officers. Amid the din created by both sides, Speaker Sumitra Singh adjourned the House thrice and finally till Wednesday after disposing of the scheduled legislative work.

Mr. Joshi, supported by the MLAs of his party, said the BJP-led government was making a “mockery of the parliamentary democracy” by giving the responsibility of districts to individuals who were not accountable to the people of the State.

“Trivial issue”

Congress MLAs claimed that Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje had earlier agreed to remove the people who had not taken oath under the Constitution. “Handing over the charge of districts to the Parliamentary Secretaries is equally untenable and the Ministers alone should be given this responsibility,” said Mr. Joshi.

However, the BJP members rejected the Opposition’s contention and said the Congress was raising such a “trivial issue” to divert attention from subjects of public interest.
