Coir training centre planned

Staff Reporter

THENI: The Coir Board plans to set up a special purpose vehicle and a common facility centre at Periakulam block to provide basic infrastructure to impart training in coir products manufacture. The board has permitted Rs.80 lakh in this connection, according to Collector S.J. Chiru.

He was delivering inaugural address at a workshop on coir processing techniques and services held here on Tuesday.

The centre will have modern machineries such as automatic spinning yarn loom and matting instruments to enable training.

Basic infrastructure for coir industry would be developed in Periakulam under special Scheme of Fund for Regeneration of Traditional Industries (SFURTI).

The special purpose vehicle comprises representatives of beneficiaries including manufacturers, self-help groups and coir co-operatives in the district.

Special training would be imparted to 450 women from 30 self help groups on manufacture of value added coir products, he added.

At present, coir industries in Cumbum, Periakulam, Theni, Uthamapalayam, Chinnamanur and Mayiladumparai blocks engage in spinning, pith block making and manufacture of curled coils. Over 100 micro enterprises manufacturing varieties of coir products, have been generating employment to 2,500 people directly and another 5,000 indirectly, he added.

The State Government, in its micro, small and medium industries policy 2008, had announced capital subsidy, power subsidy and value added tax subsidy. Entrepreneurs should avail these facilities and incentives to promote coir micro and small industries and generate employment in rural areas, he added.

Coir Board Regional Officer P.C. Antonel Vaz stated that the Centre had sanctioned a sizeable amount for development of coir products and training.
