KOCHI: The Edappally block panchayat on Tuesday passed a Rs.4.37-lakh surplus budget for 2008-09, which lay thrust on production sector and generation of employment opportunities. A major proposal in the budget was construction of a hostel complex for women belonging to Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) in Thrikkakkara at an estimated cost of Rs.1 crore. The Thrikkakkara panchayat will also participate in the project. The block panchayat is determined to give prominence to welfare schemes for SCs/STs as utilisation of funds for such schemes had not been enviable in the past, P.M. Ikkoran, block panchayat president, said. A detailed project study on the scope for developing Kadamakkudy island by exploring its potential for farming and tourism would be drawn up.
