Plan to produce 78,000 MW additional power

Special Correspondent

NEYVELI: It has been proposed to add 78,000 MW to the installed capacity of power plants in the country during the 11th Plan period, according to R.Krishnamoorthy, Member (Finance), Central Electricity Regulatory Commissioner, New Delhi.

He was delivering the keynote address at an awareness programme on “Development of electricity sector in India.”

Ever since Independence, the widening demand-supply gap in the electricity sector had not been bridged, Mr. Krishnamoorthy said. The power deficit in the country was still about 9 per cent that moved to about 12 to 15 per cent during peak hours.

Therefore, accelerated development of the power sector under the regulatory framework had become imperative, he said.

The Electricity Act 2003 formulated and notified in June 2003 aimed at accelerated development of the power sector for providing electricity at an affordable price to the consumers as well as providing adequate resources for expansion and setting up of new power projects.

Mr. Krishnamoorthy said the installed capacity of power plants in the country as on March 31, 2007 was about 1,35,000 MW. The National Electricity Policy and common minimum programme of the Centre aimed at providing electrification to 56 per cent of the rural household.

It also envisaged enhancement of per capita consumption from 631 units to 1,000 units and provision of one unit of electricity to every household.

These targets should be so programmed to become a reality by 2012, he said.
