1,600 hectares affected by rain in Karur district

KULITHALAI: Pulses, groundnut, gingelly and sunflower crops in over 1,600 hectares have been affected in the spell of unexpected rain in the past few days in the district.
A total of nine houses have been damaged but no loss of life has been reported from any part of the district.
The district administration with the assistance of the Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering, Horticulture and Revenue is assessing crop loss and the extant of fields affected.
The Collector, T.N. Venkatesh, inspected the affected fields in Kulithalai and Krishnarayapuram taluks on Monday and interacted with farmers to ascertain the havoc caused by rain.
He assured the affected people that all efforts would be made to sanction compensation for their crop loss. The administration would take all steps to highlight the problem that the district farmers face.
Preliminary estimates
Preliminary estimates by the Agriculture Department reveal that groundnut and sunflower crops raised in 500 hectares each, pulses in 350 hectares, gingelley in 250 hectares and paddy in 38.75 hectares have been damaged following the recent rains.
One house in Panjamadevi has been fully damaged, while two houses each in Chintalavadi and Minnampalli and five houses in Kulithalai taluk have been partially affected.
Crop damage was being assessed even as other departments such as the Revenue, Highways and the Public Works Department were grappling with the situation in the wake of the rains. The full gravity of the situation and damage would be known only after the exercise was completed, he said.
