Need to include moral instruction in curriculum

Special Correspondent

“Education should be a source of strengthening cultural values”

Kumbakonam: A State-level seminar on the “Relevance of modern education to the holistic development of social, cultural, economical and moral values of the people of Tamil Nadu” was conducted at the A.R.R. College of Education at Kumbakonam recently.

K.S. Subramanian, Chairman and Correspondent of the college, who presided over the seminar, said that the college wanted moral instruction to be included in the curriculum and a separate period should be allocated for it to ensure that the character of the students is shaped properly.

G. Periyannan, Director, Thamizhaga Institute of Educational Research and Advancement, Chennai, in his presentation traced the history of the growth of the educational system in the country since the days of Macaulay.

Dr. Periyannan said that teachers should do their duty sincerely. They should be an example and train students to be disciplined and proactive. “If one has to excel in his line he or she should be encouraged and teachers are the motivating sources at the grass root level of an individual,” he said.

S. Vajravelu, Professor and Head of the Department of Tamil Education, Institute of Advanced Study in Education, Chennai, said that in today’s world, education should be oriented towards inculcating the qualities of respect to elders, obedience to teachers and adherence to principles.

Masilamani, Lecturer, A.R.R. College of Education, Kumbakonam, in his presentation stressed that education should be a source of strengthening cultural values.

P. Rethinasababathy, Professor Emeritus, Computer Education, Chennai, said that everything was available in Tamil literature, including the emphasis on moral values. If teachers took pains to teach Tamil literature vividly and satisfactorily, students and the society would be benefited.

He exhorted all ladies to come forward to acquire knowledge in all fields.
