MALAPPURAM: Former Indian Ambassador to Switzerland and Vatican K.P. Balakrishnan has said that Indian management gurus should develop an indigenous style of management for the country. Inaugurating Praxis 08, a day-long national meet on ‘New horizons in business management’ at M.E.S. College of Engineering, Kuttippuram, on Tuesday, Mr. Balakrishnan said that cultural block was the biggest impediment faced by the country against globalisation. Indian businesses, he said, are considered monopolistic, family-run businesses that follow traditional management practices. Mr. Balakrishnan said Indian businesses should project a new image by developing an indigenous style of management that suits the country’s cultural environment and gels with modern management practices. Delivering the keynote address, Anandakkuttan B. Unnithan from the Indian Institute of Management-Kozhikode, said that Kerala was witnessing a shift from unorganised to organised trade. He said the interests of small players should be protected to make the retail industry more beneficial. A.D. Madhavan, former general manager of KSIDC; K.P. Mohammed, director of MES Engineering Collee; V.H. Abdul Salam, college principal; and Saji Kuriakose, head of the Department of Management Science, addressed the conference. The Department of Management Science organised Praxis 2008 as part of MESTECH, the anniversary celebrations of MES College of Engineering. Management practitioners and students from different parts of the country attended the conference, which covered such diverse areas as emerging issues in international business, managing innovations and technology, challenges before global marketers, challenges in entrepreneurial development, and global trends and perspectives at a broader level.
