Rs.8 crore for agriculture and irrigation Rs.15 crore for education and sports MALAPPURAM: The district panchayat has prepared a budget for the new fiscal giving considerable thrust to rural employment, education, agriculture and irrigation, drinking water, and development of scheduled communities. The budget presented to the panchayat council on Tuesday earmarked Rs.50 crore for rural employment under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP). The district panchayat expects an expenditure of Rs.98.6190 crore against an income of Rs.98.7458 crore, giving a surplus of Rs.12.67 lakh. As much as Rs.8 crore has been kept aside for agriculture and irrigation; Rs.2 crore each for health and animal husbandry; Rs.5 crore for drinking water; Rs.3 crore for power; Rs.15 crore for education and sports; Rs.2 crore for social welfare; Rs.3.13 crore for transportation; Rs.8.28 crore for scheduled communities development. The allocation for social forestry, soil protection, river banks protection, road development and drainage and finding new means of transport under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme will come to Rs.50 crore, the highest share in the budget. However, only Rs.71.22 lakh has been kept aside for the development of Scheduled Tribes, Rs.50 lakh for tourism, Rs.50 lakh for industry, and Rs.75 lakh for fishery. The budget has given emphasis on pooling of resources from different sectors; agriculture in production sector; providing infrastructure to ensure irrigation; enhancing the official machinery in the health sector; consideration for the terminally ill; encouraging rain water harvesting; encouraging mini waste treatment plants; proper drainage to prevent destruction of roads; and promoting non-conventional energy generation. Private investmentThe district panchayat will also encourage private investment for the district’s economic development and will offer intensive job training in IT sector. Education will get special thrust in the service sector.
