Fishermen loans waived
HYDERABAD: In a major decision, the State Government has announced waiver of loans obtained by fishermen from the Fishermen Cooperative Societies since 1982.
Announcing a series of measures for the community in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy said loans to the tune of Rs. 40.70 crore would be written off benefiting 28,270 fishermen.
The Government had decided to provide ex-gratia of Rs. 1 lakh to the families of fishermen who meet accidental deaths and it would come into effect from April 1 benefiting 4.02 lakh fishermen families.
The ex-gratia would be in addition to the insurance cover being provided to fishermen by the Centre that had been enhanced from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 1 lakh. The Government had decided to extend the provision of ex-gratia to fishermen who go missing. Accordingly, the families of the missing fishermen would be paid Rs. 10,000 once the case is reported while the balance 90 per cent would be paid after an year by duly following the guidelines.
