Man charged with arming Maoists

Staff Reporter

NUZVID (KRISHNA DT): The Krishna district police on Tuesday arrested a carpenter on the charge of making single barrel rifles with muscle loading at his workshop in Vissannapet near here, and recovered three rifles from him.

Superintendent of Police D. Siva Ramakrishnaiah, at a press conference here, charged Narakudi Basavachari alias Basavayya, 62, of Vissannapet, with making the rifles at his workshop located behind Vissannapet bus station for the past four years.

Though the accused told the police that he supplied the weapons only to farmers to protect their farm fields from birds, the police suspect that the weapons could have been supplied to Maoists in the nearby Khammam district.

The police registered a case was under Section 25 (1) of the Arms Act.

Nuzvid DSP G. Narayana Swamy was also present.
