Two-day CITU strike from April 24

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Delhi State Committee of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions has announced a two-day industrial strike in the Capital beginning April 24 to demand implementation of labour laws in letter and in spirit.

Workers of the organised and unorganised sectors in neighbouring Ghaziabad, Noida and Faridabad would also go on strike against violation of labour laws, said a CITU spokesperson on Tuesday.

Addressing a press conference here, Delhi State Committee CITU president Sudhir Kumar said: “For the past few years we have been observing that there is blatant violation of labour laws in Delhi. The eight-hour shift has changed to 12 hours and the names of workers employed in factories are not written in the attendance register. The statutory provisions of Provident Fund and Employees’ State Insurance are not being implemented and the minimum wage declared by the Government has not been paid to workers.”

Regularisation

The agitating workers will demand regularisation of all contractual workers employed by the civic bodies and the Government. Besides demanding an end to entry of Foreign Direct Investment in retail trade, the workers will also oppose construction of malls, restaurants, colleges on lands allotted for industrial sites.
