N. Raghuveera Reddy

HYDERABAD: Agriculture Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy said Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has conceded the demand of Registered Medical Practitioners (RMPs) and Private Medical Practitioners (PMPs) for official recognition after passing a test conducted by the government.

Speaking to reporters after a delegation of RMPs and PMPs represented their demand to Dr. Reddy in the Assembly on Tuesday, the Minister said the Chief Minister also called up P.K. Agrawal, Principal Secretary, Medical and Health, over phone and asked the latter to initiate steps for granting recognition to these physicians.

Guidelines soon

Guidelines on the functions of RMPs and PMPs would be finalised soon. They would cover the services that the physicians could extend and the medicines that they could prescribe. The government would finalise the syllabus for the test that they would have to take to qualify, Mr. Raghuveera Reddy said.

The Minister said that the government intended to utilise the services of qualified RMPs and PMPs to motivate people to make use of ‘104’ emergency service.

They would also be deployed in the pulse polio and other programmes. Medical Officers of Primary Health Centres could train RMPs and PMPs in their jurisdictional areas.

Election promise

He also said the State would be the first in the country to recognise their services which was the election promise of Congress. There were 1.5 lakh of them in the State. They went by the name of ‘barefoot doctors’ in China where they were already recognised.

Leaders of the Federation of Experienced Medical Practitioners’ Associations, who were part of the delegation, were present.
