THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Special arrangements will be made under the Jana Maitri Suraksha Scheme for protection of women, children and the elderly, and lending assistance to victims of crime, Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said in an article released for publication. District Superintendents of Police would take the lead in ensuring protection of women and children. The cooperation of office-bearers of Kudumbasree and similar programmes would also be sought for the purpose. The Minister said that help-lines would be provided for old persons living alone in their homes. The Jana Maitri councils would provide assistance, including medical treatment, counselling and rehabilitation, to victims of crime. He said that the councils would form vigilance committees to check anti-social activities in schools and colleges, implement social security schemes for drivers and other categories of workers and carry out campaigns against alcoholism and drug abuse.
