KOCHI: A meeting held at the District Collectorate on Monday to discuss measures to help farmers who had suffered damage to crops in the unseasonal rain decided not to deny relief to any aggrieved farmer in the district for want of tax receipts. The meeting decided to ensure the farmers’ ownership over the land and to accept alternative documents to that effect, District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish said. Fisheries Minister S. Sarma presided over the meeting. The meeting evaluated extensive damage to punja cultivation in hundreds of acres in Amballoor and Edakattuvayal panchayats. The executive engineer concerned was directed to reinstate power connection required for working the motor to pump water from punja fields in Pulimukham. It was also decided to install 50hp-motor at a cost of Rs. 15 lakh. The Agriculture Deputy Director was instructed to assess the number of power threshers needed to be installed. A thresher costs about Rs.1.25 lakh. The Fisheries Deputy Director was asked to estimate the extent of damage suffered by shrimp farms in the district. A meeting chaired by Piravom MLA M.J. Jacob and to be attended by Agriculture Department and Minor Irrigation Department officials would be convened shortly to identify the urgent works to be carried out and submit a proposal to the government in this regard before month-end.
