NEW DELHI: The Annual Plan outlay for Madhya Pradesh for 2008-09 was on Tuesday pegged at Rs 14,182.61 crore at a meeting between Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia and Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan. It includes a one-time additional Central assistance component of Rs.150 crore for priority projects.

In his comments on the State’s performance, Dr. Ahluwalia pointed out that the Government should pay more attention to development of human resources. The social sector, he said, should also be accorded priority and efforts should be aimed at improving the human development index through policy initiatives for creating an investor-friendly environment.

He said the State Government should avail of the benefits available under various social sector schemes. Efforts should be made to improve performance in various programmes under Bharat Nirman. He said priority should be given to schemes related to the Bundelkhand area. The power sector should get focused attention as achievement of higher growth rate in Eleventh Plan could be constrained due to power shortage.

Briefing the Commission on the State’s performance during the fiscal and its programmes for 2008-09, Mr. Chauhan said that the thrust areas would be elimination of hunger, malnutrition and abject poverty.

Fresh opportunities for livelihood would be created by way of generating economic activities based on natural resources.

A number of new initiatives have been taken to improve social protection.
