‘Provide information sought by consumer organisation’

Staff Reporter

Coimbatore: The State Information Commission has directed the Joint Director of Town Panchayats, Chennai, to provide the information sought by Coimbatore Consumer Cause (CCC) before March 28.

Position of sites

CCC secretary K. Kathirmathiyon, in a release, said that the consumer body applied under the Right to Information Act on September 5, 2007, to the Joint Director of Town Panchayats seeking information regarding the position of sites in the layouts not lawful but approved by the Executive Officers on their own, which was against the government guidelines and rules.

The request sought specific information on whether these sites could be regularised as per the regularisation scheme announced by the government in the Government Order no 59 of Municipal Administration and Drinking Water Supply Department dated July 25, 2006.

The application wanted to know whether any action could be taken against the houses built on the sites that were not regularised.

Relief

The consumer body requested for information in respect of the sites in the “illegally approved layouts” and purchased after July 24, 2006 (cut off date of regularisation of unapproved sites) and whether any relief was available for the public who purchased those sites.

The consumer body moved the Government for the information by filing an application before the Public Information Officer of the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department.

The Public Information Officer forwarded the application to the Director of Town Panchayats.

Hence, the consumer body preferred the second appeal with the State Information Commission on January 4, 2008.

Now, the Commission has directed the Joint Director, Directorate of Town Panchayats, Chennai, to provide the required information to the consumer body before March 28 and report the same to the Commission.
