Fire at rubber unit

KOCHI: A fire broke out at a unit in the Rubber Park at Irapuram, near Perumbavoor, in the early hours of Tuesday. An electric short circuit is believed to have caused the fire. No loss of life or injury was reported. Machinery, rubber sheets and other products worth several crores of rupees were damaged in the fire.

The fire at the L&P Company was noticed around 5 a.m., sources said. It was brought under control by 8.30. a.m., Fire tenders from Perumbavoor and Muvattupuzha were engaged in fire-fighting operations. There are more than a dozen rubber-based units functioning at the Park. The Park provides common facilities for various rubber-based manufacturing and commercial units. Apollo Tyres is among the prospective companies planning to move into the park.
