Centre to bear the cost of BG line from Karaikal to Nagore

Efforts on to obtain more power from Central units

PUDUCHERRY: A Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is being set up at an estimated cost of Rs. 283.17 crore under public-private partnership mode, Lieutenant Governor Bhopinder Singh said in his address to the Assembly on Tuesday.

Land to the extent of 336 hectares had been acquired and handed over to the Special Purpose Vehicle floated by the administration to set up the SEZ, he said adding that steps had been taken to provide road connectivity, power and water supply to the unit.

Referring to the railway projects in the Union Territory, Mr. Singh said the Centre had agreed to bear the entire cost of the 10.7 km-long new broad gauge line from Karaikal to Nagore. Work had already been awarded on turn key basis and the project would be completed in 18 months.

On the steps taken to improve the power scenario, he said efforts were on to obtain additional allocation of power from Central generating stations. In the next five years, the demand for power in the Union Territory would go up to about 650 mw.

Mr. Singh said that in the first phase of the airport expansion, the runway would be extended by another 260 meters to operate ATR type of aircraft. In the second phase, the runway would be extended to facilitate the operation of bigger aircraft, he added. On the steps taken to establish a green filed airport in Karaikal, he said the Airports Authority of India had already submitted a preliminary report.

The Lieutenant Governor also informed that the private developer entrusted with the task of establishing a port at Karaikal had obtained the clearance from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests. The port would become operational by 2009, he said.
