Meeting reviews arrangements to handle flood situation

Coimbatore: District Collector V. Palanikumar on Tuesday held a meeting to check the preparedness of the administration in mitigating the sufferings caused by the recent rain. The Collector exhorted officials to remain in a state of readiness to handle any emergency situation in future.
Mr. Palanikumar addressed the heads of departments from agriculture, horticulture, public works department, revenue, highways department, police and fire and rescue services department. He urged the agriculture and horticulture department officials to carry out an extensive study of the crops damaged by the recent rain and the resultant floods.
A report on the extent of the damage to crops would enable the administration to approach the Government to have a relief package worked out. He also urged the highways department officials to immediately take steps to make the rain-battered roads motorable and also to prepare detailed plans and estimate to re-lay the battered stretches.

Minister for Rural Industries Pongalur N. Palanisamy on Monday handed over a cheque for Rs. 1 lakh to the family members of Saraswathy who was killed in a wall collapse at Avanashi on Friday night. Highways Minister M.P. Saminathan on Sunday disbursed Rs. 1,000, rice, dhotis and sarees to the family of the deceased as an interim relief. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had issued an order to give Rs. 1 lakh as relief to those killed in rain-related incidents. Mr. Palanisamy along with District Revenue Officer S. Prabhakaran gave the cheque to Saraswathy’s husband Velusamy.
Mr. Palanisamy visited Vavipalayam, Vadamalaipalayam, Kalveripalayam, Putharachal areas where standing onion crops were damaged by flash floods caused by the downpour. The Minister visited farm lands with the standing crop like onions which were fully submerged. The Minister asked Mr. Prabakaran to carry out a survey to assess the extent of the damage to the crops.
