Novel protest: Members of Erode District Tax Payers People’s Welfare Association ‘petition’ Mahatma Gandhi at the Erode Corporation on Tuesday.

ERODE: ‘Mahatma Gandhi’, who is at the Erode Corporation compound, had a few surprise visitors on Tuesday morning.

A group of people representing the Erode District Tax Payers People’s Welfare Association ‘petitioned’ him about the ‘phenomenal raise’ in property tax in the Erode Corporation.

In the petitions, the Association complained that the State Government’s decision to revise property tax by 100 to 150 per cent would burden the public to a great extent.

Tax revision

Stating that property tax in Erode was already on the higher side, the Association wanted the tax revision to be not more than 10 per cent for houses, 20 per cent for commercial buildings and 25 per cent for industries.

Ward 23 councillor Radhamani Bharathi said the Association petitioned Gandhiji because during the Independence movement, he had refused to pay tax [salt tax] and brought down the British Empire.

Signal

The protest was to signal that they too would defeat the move to collect ‘exorbitant tax’ from the public.

The second reason she said was to signal that their protest was just and would be on Gandhian lines.
