PMK seeks land tax waiver in rain-hit districts

Staff Reporter

VIRUDHUNAGAR: The Pattali Makkal Katchi has demanded waiver of land tax and crop loan of affected farmers in all rain-affected districts.

Talking to reporters here on Tuesday after touring the affected districts, party leader G.K. Mani said officials in the rank of Secretary should be directed to monitor relief work.

“We have received many complaints of officials having not visited the affected areas in many districts. Besides, timely relief has not reached them.

While the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi suspended Assembly proceedings for two days to facilitate relief work, the officials did not live up to his expectations, Mr. Mani said.

Even after 10 days of continuous rain, many districts could not collate details of crop-wise damage. The presence of Secretaries in districts could expedite relief work, he said.

The party had collected details of crop-wise damage in each district through direct visits and from voluntary organisations, Mr. Mani said.

Relief inadequate

The Rs.100-crore relief announced by the State government was not adequate, he said, and sought compensation of Rs.15,000 per acre of plantain, Rs.10,000 for paddy and chilli and Rs.5,000 for pulses crop affected by the rain.

The party also wanted suitable compensation for the employees of salt pans in the coastal districts and rubber plantations.
