THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Central team to assess the damage to paddy and other crops in the heavy rain last week will reach the State this week, Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran has said. In a statement here on Tuesday, Mr. Rajendran said A.K. Yadav, Joint Secretary in the Union Home Ministry, would head the team. Besides Mr. Yadav, the team would have a member each from the Union Finance and Agriculture ministries. The details of their tour to the districts would be finalised soon. In a memorandum to the Centre, the State government has sought Rs.150 crore as assistance to help the farmers. It has released Rs.12 crore for relief from the State exchequer. Paddy in nearly 26,000 hectares was damaged or destroyed owing to flooding, preliminary estimates say. The Cabinet is slated to discuss compensation for the farmers on Wednesday. The Agriculture Department has proposed that up to Rs.10,000 be granted as compensation per hectare of paddy. It is working on detailed estimation of the damage for submission to the team.
